About the artist

Leah Justyce

I've been a working artist for over 26 years, with my work featured in British Vogue, World of Interiors, and House & Garden UK. My pet portrait practice grows from the same place all my work does — a belief that the animals we love deserve to be painted with the same seriousness as any other subject.

"I paint the relationship, not just the animal."

My contemporary impressionist style captures personality and presence — loose, expressive brushwork with careful attention to light. These are paintings made to live on significant walls, in significant homes, for a long time.

Why I paint

They become our family

I want this to really be about the pets that have been, and are, part of our lives — the ones who become our family.

I've surrounded myself with dogs for as long as I can remember. I used to show and breed Bullmastiffs in the conformation ring, and sadly, in 2026, the last of my lines passed away. I was lucky he lived until 10 — he was the oldest Bullmastiff I had — but 10 is not long enough.

When I was 16 I drew a litter of British Bulldog puppies, and always wanted one. Years later I got my Hoelow from New Zealand. She lived for 9 years, and when my heart was so broken after losing her, I got Maze — my second British Bulldog. I put her outside one day to go to the toilet, went to get her ten minutes later, and she had passed away. She was only 5. I had never lost a dog like that — she looked so peaceful, and just gone, like that. That broke me.

Now I have three Frenchies. The girls were born two days before Maze passed, and I rescued Eddie.

I wanted to tell this because I paint our family members — the ones we were blessed to have in our lives. xox

Questions

Things people ask me

What photos do you need from me?

Clear, in-focus, well-lit photos with your pet's face front-on or at a slight angle. Natural daylight works best. The more options you send, the better — I'll select the strongest reference.

How long does a commission take?

Allow 8–12 weeks from deposit to delivery — this covers painting, framing, and shipping. I'll give you an estimated timeline when we confirm your commission.

Do you paint all types of animals?

Dogs and cats are most common but I paint any beloved animal — horses, rabbits, birds, and more. Reach out and we can discuss your specific pet.

Will I see progress before it's finished?

I'll share progress images with you as the portrait develops, so you can see your pet come to life. The artistic decisions throughout are mine to make — that's what you're commissioning.

Is delivery really free?

Yes — free tracked delivery anywhere in Australia is included in every commission, framed and ready to hang. International collectors receive their painting unframed, professionally rolled and shipped in a protective tube.

Can I commission a memorial portrait?

Absolutely. Memorial commissions are handled with extra care. As long as you have good reference photos, I can paint a portrait of a pet who has passed — and it's one of the most meaningful things I do.
